The repaired ceramic looks so much more interesting and beautiful with the kintsugi treatment!

Lara! What a lovely post. I too was born in Los Angeles and I lived in the Fairfax district as a child in the 70s on Spaulding. I attended Rosewood elementary school before my mom remarried and we moved to Agoura Hills and then to the Bay Area. As I read your post, I was certain you and I must've crossed paths as kids walking to school or at The Farmer's Market poking around the joke shop or the sticker store. I loved growing up in that area even though we too were poor before my mom remarried. I moved back to Los Angeles from the SF Bay Area in the late 90s to an apartment on Orange Grove Ave and my mom said, "All I wanted to do was get out of that neighborhood and you went running back." :) So many memories in this city despite the constant changes.

Also, I just read your latest Substack and OMG, I had just made a note to myself this morning to watch "You Hurt My Feelings." I know the reviews were mixed, but I'll take a mixed Nicole Holofcener-Julia L-D joint over almost anything else any day!

Thanks for reading! I loved the film and if you're a fan of Nicole Holofcener and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, I'm certain you'll love it too!

Oh thank you so much Hilary! I'm sure we ran into each other at the Farmer's Market, and probably Kiddyland and the pony rides as tots! I went to Melrose, but had friends who went to Rosewood.

I'm so glad you made your way back <3

The ceramic piece looks beautiful. Who knew you had this talent? And what a lovely story that goes with it.

We have been lucky to grow up in neighborhoods that are interesting and diverse.

Wabi sabi! I love that you’re doing that! When we went to Japan I wanted to find people who had wabi sabi studios and our travel designer said, “take a day and look for imperfections.”🤨 Maybe I was using the wrong name but no matter - I know you! Also, I lived in Park La Brea in a sweet sublet from 84-86. I think you must have been there. I bought my first dog, a blue chow named Oshka, at the Beverly Center. Thank you for the beautiful look into community, your share group, your world. I can smell the roses.🌹

Lara...that was delightful and I loved every word. I related to a lot of it. I grew up in Inglewood, near Crenshaw and Imperial. It was near a neighborhood called Hollypark, and although I lived there for 15 years, I cannot remember the name of our brand new subdivision. I do remember the closeness of the neighborhood, how I knew all the people on my block and many on the other blocks...how I walked to school, passing by the two shopping centers that anchored the area, how to this day, some of us who grew up there and still know each other (on FB and via email), still talk about the record store, the candy at the corner drug store, the toy store, the restaurants, the Tip Top Club, where Ike and Tina Turner played for many years...the memories are magical. The photo of your school class brought back so many memories too. I now live in a town of 1000 people in Montana. It's SO different and for twenties years I desired to move back to a city...where I could be part of all the action. Age and disabilities changed me...but my memories comfort me.
